For our listening experience today I present Kapalua Coastal Trail Soundwalk. It’s a mouthful. I debated with myself whether to keep all those words and I ended up thinking they were useful. In general, when it comes to my design thesis for this whole Soundwalk project, I want to be almost radically specific when it comes to place and time of recording. I Guess I felt like it was always the missing link in terms of incorporating field recording with music; specificity, a very personal sense of being some place. Authenticity.

Kapalua Coastal Trail far from a wilderness. This is the Maui resort coast after all. But at times it feels quite natural, among the grassy dunes of Oneola beach, out on the rocky headlands, and on the branch trail to Namalu Bay. This recording covers the sections and settles in for a spell alongside the azure gentle waters of Namalu bay.

The approach I took compostion-wise was piano the whole way through. And I kept it that way! I did add uke, synths and woodwind and string arrangements, but this is the first soundwalk where piano along for the whole ride. And I like how it turned out! it’s a nice sendoff too, because for the next and last album/episode from Hawaii we say goodbye to my old friend. No piano at all!
