I had planned to whisk you off to the Colorado, but the spontaneous creation of the Lahaina Town Soundwalk made me take another listen at the scattershot recordings I made in Hawaii over the summer. Turns out there was indeed something to work with. Two or three somethings.

It’s really quite fun for me to be flying by the seat of my pants, so to speak, with the release schedule. Releasing music typically doesn’t happen on the scale of weeks. It’s usually months between the soundscape capture to wrapping a musical composition and then months again until release. As I write this, I’m just now wrapping up the next release for a fortnight from now. So it's almost as fresh as it gets.

This soundwalk comes from Honolua Bay in West Maui. Access to the bay is via private property, generously open to the public. A pathway leads through a primeval jungle with giant trees and no shortage of “red jungle fowl”, also known as wild chickens. Most of the birds you hear here you will find around the coastline of Maui in varying numbers. They are all introduced and naturalized, native to Asia. They include Spotted Dove, Zebra Dove, Common Myna, Red-billed Leiothrix, Black Francolin, and native to South America, the Red-crested Cardinal. Here however, you get this colonnade of massive tree trunks that reverberate with the sounds of the wildlife.

The instrumentation follows the piano and ukulele duet I employed in Lahaina town Soundwalk, adding warm, washy synthesizers

It's a truly special place of natural splendor, a conservation zone for native fish, a winter surf hotspot. and a significant cultural site for native Hawaiians.
