Sandhill cranes have been on Earth for an incredibly long time. Up to six million years. They are known for their beauty, their dancing, and their distinctive repertoire of calls. Those calls, and the ambience of their habitat on the Columbia River, at a refuge called Cranes Landing in Vancouver Washington, are captured here and paired with minimal melodic compositions for piano, woodwinds, mallet instruments and the occasional synthesizer. It's a part ambient, part post-classical, all sensitively crafted music that defies easy categorization.
