River View Natural Area in Portland Oregon is a 146 acre woodland purchased by the city just a decade ago with "social (unofficially developed) trails" that enjoys surprisingly low human usage. It is a nice place to go if you want to wander around and soak up the sounds of a 70-year-old forest ecosystem and emergent habitat. You may chance upon a striking Pileated Woodpecker excavating for a meal, or a Pacific Wren singing its effervescent song. With the 23rd installment of his Field Reports series, composer Chad Crouch transports you there with his crisp immersive field recordings and uncomplicated compositions for piano, tuned percussion and subtle synthesizer.
