“Swan Songs” is a tender collection of elegantly uncomplicated piano compositions with sparse accompaniment intertwined with field recordings of Tundra Swans and other wildlife ambience at William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon. Crouch has been honing his craft as a composer and field recordist over the last couple of years with his Field Reports music project—music that is inspired by, and responsive to natural places. The attention to craft shows: Crouch plays an assortment of three upright pianos with warmth and character. His field recordings are transparent. Together the music and soundscapes hold each other in tension, giving each other space, working together, dancing.
