about

Beats born on a phone. The app I used to create this music has a lot in common with a 20th century pocket instrument predecessor: the harmonica. Imagine a harmonica with a built in 4-track recorder, drum machine and synth. At launch the app selects a tempo and key. Like a harmonica there’s only enough room for the notes in the scale of the key. Additionally you get a lead, bass, and drum track preloaded with sounds, and the song is even automagically named. In the spirit of an improv actor, I say “yes, and...”. I keep the tempo and key, I try out the sounds, and I even keep those quirky song titles it generates. While this sounds magical (and is) the pokes and swipes are no less a performance than the manipulations learned by the student harmonica player. The aim is the same: how can I coax deeper and more nuanced levels of expression from my instrument?
I iterate a few 8 or 16 bar loops, and then wing them over to my laptop for arranging with supportive overdubs. In keeping with the spirit of exploration I’ve been trying to compose surprising combinations. The results have produced some music that doesn’t fit neatly in electronic, hip hop or pop genres, or sub-genres for that matter, so I’m going with “genre-less” for now.
